Titanium dental implants

Dental implants made of titanium have been present in oral implantology since the 1960s, and today it is completely dominated by it. They have represented a standard of quality and a proven solution behind many scientific studies and many positive experiences of implantologists and patients for many years.

In this article, read about the following topics:

Emergence of titanium dental implants

We owe the creation of titanium dental implants and their introduction into implantology to a Swedish orthopaedic surgeon and professor, Per-Ingvar Brånemark, (1929-2014).

Professor Brånemark was the first to discover the possibility of adhesion of pure titanium with bone in his experiments.

Titanium had already been used in orthopaedic surgery as a material for making implants and had proven to be a biocompatible material.

Professor Brånemark turned his studies very quickly to dental implants made of titanium and shaped them into screws.

In 1965 he implanted the first titanium dental implant in the human jaw.

This was a confirmation of a great scientific discovery: osseointegration of titanium dental implants with bones of the human jaw.

The entirety of modern dental implantology rests on the concept of osseointegration discovered by Professor Brånemark.

Suffice it to say that the patient who was the first in the world to receive titanium dental implants, a certain gentleman named Gösta Larsson, had them for 40 years, until his death in 2006.

Why is titanium a great material for dental implants?

Titanium belongs to bioinert materials. As such, titanium does not interfere with the ability of bone tissue to renew and shape itself anew.

Modern titanium implants possess specially treated osteoconductive surfaces which means they stimulate adhesion of implants to the bone. We call this process osseointegration.

These are facts already established by Professor Brånemark, and in the decades that followed they were proven in many studies under an electron microscope.

We can enumerate other excellent properties of titanium which make it an excellent material for dental implants:

  • High biocompatibility
  • Resistance to corrosion
  • Low thermal conductivity
  • High hardness and stretch
  • Resistance to deformation
  • Low density and low specific weight
  • Neutral flavour
  • Excellent X-ray visibility

Titanium dental implants are extremely biocompatible.

Many of our satisfied patients even forget they have implants.

Wide application of titanium dental implants

Because titanium dental implants have existed and been in use for several decades, a huge number of related implant solutions have developed.

We could say that there is no clinical indication, from the simplest to the most complex, for which there is no quality and proven titanium-based implant solution.

Proven properties and predictable results

Thanks to a great number of scientific papers and studies on titanium dental implants, and the fact that they are installed in dental offices and clinics worldwide, and the positive feedback from a large number of implantologists and patients, we can say with certainty that dental implants made of titanium are a proven quality solution.

Lower price compared to ceramic dental implants

With all of the above, a lower price of the raw material, its processing, as well as the production of titanium dental implant should not be left out, especially if we compare it with ceramic dental implants.

There are many manufacturers of titanium dental implants. This has led us to having economic, standard and premium classes of dental implants today.

Simply put, there are different prices for dental implants today, but without deviation in quality which would impair the health of the patient.

Lifetime warranty on titanium dental implants

Most of today’s titanium dental implant manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty for their implants.

In this group, without exception, are all manufacturers of top-quality dental implants, such as the company Nobel Biocare or MIS.

The stated lifetime warranty guarantees that implant cracks will not occur and that, in the unlikely event that this occurs, they will be replaced with new implants.

Titanium dental implants have a lifetime warranty against damage.

With them, you can solve the problem of missing teeth long-term.

Is there an allergy to metal dental implants?

Everything we have said so far about titanium dental implants is positive. However, there is a fear among patients of incorporating metal into their body.

In particular, it is a matter of fear of allergic reactions to metal dental implants.

Allergic reactions and hypersensitivity after implantation of titanium implants have been recorded. As studies have shown, they are very rare and we are considering about only 0.6% of cases ([1] Albrektsson T, Chrcanovic B, Mölne J, Wennerberg A. Foreign body reactions, marginal bone loss and allergies in relation to titanium implants. Eur J Oral Implantol. 2018;11 Suppl 1:S37-S4; [2] Sicilia A, et al. Titanium allergy in dental implant patients: a clinical study on 1500 consecutive patients. Clin Oral Implants Res. 2008;19(8):823¬835).

However, it should be clarified that in these cases often it is not a reaction to titanium, but to nickel or other metals and chemical elements present in the dental implant.

How pure is the titanium from which dental implants are made?

The purity of the titanium from which dental implants are made is classified into grades of purity from 1 to 4.

Each of these classes belongs to the commercially pure titanium, which means they are composed of more than 99% of titanium.

These purity classes were created by adding other chemical elements to titanium, especially oxygen and iron, but also others, such as carbon, nitrogen and vanadium, in the desire to improve certain properties of titanium.

After conducting allergy research and tests to hypersensitivity in persons who had reactions after implantation of titanium dental implants it has not been proven that their cause was in fact titanium.

On the contrary, it is thought that there may be very small, otherwise negligible amounts of metals in titanium such as nickel, chromium, palladium, copper, manganese, which may cause an allergic response in the body.

The occurrence of any reactions to titanium dental implants is statistically negligible.

This is a biocompatible and very reliable solution for missing teeth.

Can the body reject a titanium dental implant?

In addition to the fear of an allergic reaction, there is also the fear that the body will reject a dental implant due to hypersensitivity or allergy to metal and that it will fall out.

It is true that the rejection of dental implants sometimes occurs. However, research has concluded that dental implant rejections most often result from non-compliance with the recommended dental hygiene, smoking, failed osseointegration, etc., and not due to titanium allergy [1] Moy, PK, D. Medina, V. Shetty and TL Aghaloo (2005). “Dental implant failure rates and associated risk factors.” Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants 20(4): 569-577.)
