Popping and clicking in the area of the temporomandibular joint

Different sounds and clicks, cracking, snapping or popping in the temporomandibular joint are very widespread and common in people who have a TMJ disorder.

They are divided into sounds of grating (crepitus) and clicking, which occur as a result of displacement of articular discs. Not every sound is a cause for alarm, but if they are accompanied by pain and difficulty in opening the jaw, they will certainly require therapy.

Bruxism or teeth grinding

If you suffer from bruxism, that is, unconscious clenching of the jaw and frequent teeth grinding, you are at risk of developing TMJ disorders.

Maybe you are not aware that you suffer from bruxism? Bruxism often occurs during sleep, so the person is sometimes unaware that they are grinding their teeth. There are a number of signs, changes and symptoms that accompany bruxism.

If any of these conditions interfere with your daily life and work and reduce your quality of life, there is no doubt that you need treatment of the temporomandibular joint.

Treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders

After extensive diagnostics and functional analysis, our first goal in the treatment of the temporomandibular joint disorders will be to relieve symptoms, particularly pain. In order to do this, we must first determine the source of the pain.

The treatment that follows usually lasts several months and your commitment is crucial for its success. Specifically, the most common cause of TMJ disorders is stress. Therefore, in addition to following all treatment advice, you will also need to learn to relax.

At the Apolonija Dental Clinic, we adhere to a TMJ treatment protocol which consists of 4 steps:

  • Detailed diagnostics
  • Procedures for eliminating functional stimuli and reducing system excitability.
  • Short-term relaxing therapy using a splint or aqualiser.
  • Long-term corrective and reconstruction therapy.

Treatment of the temporomandibular joint at the Apolonija Dental Clinic is led by Professor Tomislav Lauc, PhD, whose specialization and area of training is, among other things, treatment of painful conditions of the jaw.
