Teeth whitening is one of the simplest, fastest, and most effective ways to freshen and beautify your smile. Therefore, teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after dental services today.
The most important thing is that the patient’s teeth are healthy. This means that they must not have any cavities or inflammatory processes. Artificial dental crowns, dental veneers, dental bridges and fillings cannot be whitened, so whitening is primarily aimed at natural teeth. Of course, darker crowns and bridges can be replaced with lighter aesthetic crowns.
The first thing that is necessary before teeth whitening is to remove plaque and pigmentation from the teeth. Plaque and tartar deposits take on color from food pigments. Removing them makes the teeth shiny and smooth again, but does not change the natural color of the teeth. Plaque must be removed before teeth whitening treatment.
How do we perform teeth whitening?
At the Apolonija Dental Polyclinic, we perform two-phase teeth whitening. In the first phase, professional teeth whitening is performed by a dentist in the office, and in the second phase, the whitening continues at home using special whitening splints. Many years of experience have shown us that we achieve the best results with a two-phase whitening process.
In a conversation with the patient, we will first assess and explain what can be expected from one or more whitening treatments. We will also try to conclude what shades of teeth can be achieved from their existing color.
The teeth whitening treatment takes about an hour. The results will be visible immediately, but will gradually develop over the next 10 to 14 days.
Sometimes it is not possible to achieve the desired shade of teeth. The degree of whitening of teeth is influenced by their natural color, so, for example, yellowish teeth whiten much better than those with a grayish tint.
Recommendations after in-office whitening
It is recommended that the patient not consume food or drink for at least 60 minutes after in-office whitening. It is recommended to avoid highly pigmented foods and drinks after whitening.
Sometimes, after whitening, some patients’ teeth may be sensitive, especially to hot or cold, but this phenomenon is usually temporary and stops within a day or two.
Maintaining white teeth
Whitened teeth retain their whiteness for a while, and then it gradually diminishes. To maintain white teeth, it is necessary to perform home whitening periodically.
At the Apolonija Polyclinic, we recommend home whitening trays that we have determined to be the most effective, and which can be used as a supplement to professional teeth whitening to preserve their whiteness.
