Biocompatible zirconia implants

Today, ceramic metal-free dental implants are an increasingly popular solution among informed patients. They are made of zirconium ceramics and are therefore also called zirconium dental implants.

When and why do we recommend zirconia dental implants?

Zirconia ceramics are biocompatible and hypoallergenic materials. Therefore, these dental implants eliminate the small possibility of allergic reactions that can occur with standard titanium implants.

Also, the surface of zirconia implants is smooth and less prone to plaque and bacteria accumulation, which significantly reduces the risk of inflammation and peri-implantitis. The incidence of inflammation around implants is significantly less than with titanium implants. Scientific research shows that, compared to titanium, zirconia particles of the same size do not cause an inflammatory immune response (TNF- α ).

Zirconia dental implants are white in color and will therefore look better aesthetically in all patients who have the implant placed in place of their front teeth, especially in those with naturally thin gums and/or a more transparent bone structure.

The metal edge of titanium implants can sometimes be seen above the crown over time if the gums recede. Gum recession occurs naturally as we age, which is why we most often recommend ceramic implants to patients, especially younger ones, as a functional but also permanent aesthetic solution.

What are ceramic dental implants made of?

Ceramic dental implants are made of zirconium ceramic, which is obtained from zirconium dioxide (ZrO2).

It is a ceramic material that has been used for decades in the manufacture of industrial cutters, tools, kitchen knives, etc. In medicine, this material was first used in orthopedics.

Since they are made from zirconium dioxide, they are also called zirconia dental implants.

    Osseointegration and healing

Zirconia ceramics are biocompatible materials. In addition, zirconia ceramics are hypoallergenic. Therefore, ceramic dental implants eliminate the extremely small possibility of an allergic reaction to the implanted implant.

Both types of implants achieve the highest degree of osseointegration and healing. Ceramic dental implants also show a slightly lower degree of plaque and bacteria attraction and retention compared to titanium implants.

    Price of ceramic dental implant

Due to the very complex production, the price of a ceramic dental implant is approximately twice the price of a titanium dental implant.
