Professor Darko Macan was born in 1956 in Zagreb. He graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Zagreb, in 1980. After four years of volunteering, he has been working at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery in Zagreb since 1985. He defended his master’s thesis in 1985. He passed the specialist exam in oral surgery in 1989. He continued his professional development at home and abroad at study stays and courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery (Glasgow, Ljubljana, Vienna, Hanau-Wolfgang).
He defended his dissertation in 1999, and was elected to the scientific and teaching title of full professor in a permanent position in 2014. Since 2001, he has had the status of primarius. He is the Head of the Department of Oral Surgery at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Head of the Department of Oral Surgery at the Clinic for Facial, Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery at the Dubrava Clinical Hospital. He is the President of the Croatian Society for Dental Implantology, for two terms he was the President of the Croatian Society for Oral Surgery and the Secretary of the Croatian Society for Maxillofacial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Head and Neck of the Croatian Medical Association. At the Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, he participates in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the subjects Preclinical Oral Surgery, Oral Surgery 1, Head of the subjects Oral Surgery 2, Dental Implantology and Forensic Dentistry. He is the Head of the postgraduate specialist study Dental Implantology. At the Faculty of Medicine, he participates in teaching the postgraduate specialist study Maxillofacial Surgery.
He has published more than 200 papers in total. He is the author of chapters in several professional books, an invited speaker at numerous domestic and international conferences, and the leader of Ankylos implantology courses in the country and abroad.
